A Portland Icon with Heart: Celebrating Mr. Plywood

At the Chelsea Hicks Foundation, we are deeply grateful to the local businesses that help us brighten the lives of children who need us most, bringing joy and magic every step of the way. One of those businesses is Mr. Plywood, an iconic family-owned store that has been serving Portland for over 60 years. Their dedication to quality, service, and giving back makes them a true partner in our mission.

Nestled in Southeast Portland off 82nd Avenue, the recognizable Mr. Plywood sign has welcomed generations of customers. People return time and again for quality products, expert guidance, and the kind of service that only comes from a business deeply rooted in the community.

For decades, their friendly and knowledgeable staff has helped customers bring projects to life, from planning to completion. Whether it’s a major construction project or a small DIY job, Mr. Plywood provides the products, expertise, and hands-on support needed to succeed. Their commitment to quality and customer satisfaction has made them a trusted Portland name for over six decades.

At the heart of Mr. Plywood is owner Bret Brantner, a leader with genuine heart. Alongside his wife Brenda, Bret cares deeply about his customers, employees, and the Portland community. Their authenticity and generosity shine through in everything they do, especially when supporting causes that make a real difference.

This year, Bret and Brenda went above and beyond by sponsoring our Hospital Heroes program, bringing comfort, joy, and moments of magic to children during hospital visits. They also rallied the entire Mr. Plywood crew to support a Silly Slipper and Pajama Drive for the Chelsea Hicks Foundation Chelsea’s Closet. The team proudly decorated a red donation barrel and placed it at the front of the store, where it quickly filled with silly slippers full of personality and cozy pajama bottoms that sparked smiles and giggles for kids who needed them most. Support like this allows us to continue showing up for children and families during some of their hardest days.

When businesses like Mr. Plywood lead with generosity and customers choose to support businesses that give back, it creates a ripple effect that helps organizations like ours keep making a difference. Their leadership and commitment bring joy and comfort to children in need and inspire others in the community to do the same.

We are deeply honored to partner with such a long-standing and respected Portland business. Thank you to Bret, Brenda, the entire Mr. Plywood team, and their loyal customers for helping us spread magic and making it possible to continue this important work.
