Celebrating Sherwood High School Leadership: The Power of Youth in Action

It all began with a visit to Katie Rarick’s Leadership class at Sherwood High School. Katie is an exceptional educator who understands the value of empowering students. She knows that the best way to help young leaders grow is by giving them room to make decisions, follow their hearts, and take real ownership. And wow, did they ever.
After sharing with an early morning group of leadership students about the work the Chelsea Hicks Foundation does, it did not take long for leadership student Natasha Santos to take action. Very quickly, Sherwood High’s Leadership program organized a supply drive to support Chelsea’s Closet and also scheduled a volunteer day at our warehouse.
When the original ten volunteer slots filled immediately, we opened it up to fifteen, and those were claimed just as quickly.
On December 9, these students arrived at our warehouse ready to work. And work they did.
The power of youth is truly remarkable.
In just an hour and a half this incredible group completed the following:
- Sorted and counted 368 costumes
- Organized 265 toys
- Sorted 183 accessories
- Processed 44 costumes for upcoming hospital visits
- Crushed and hauled out large amounts of cardboard to the recycling bins
This amazing team accomplished in ninety minutes what would have taken us weeks. Their energy, teamwork, and enthusiasm were truly inspiring.
So yes, please and thank you Sherwood High School Leadership. You showed up with heart, purpose, and superhero level determination. We are so grateful.
And their impact is not stopping there.
Next up, Sherwood High School Leadership is organizing a community wide supply drive for Chelsea’s Closet. They have even arranged for donation barrels to be placed at the Sherwood YMCA and the local library. The drive will collect bubbles, crayons, coloring books, and stickers. We cannot wait to see what these wonderful students accomplish next.
The power of youth is real, and Sherwood High is proving it every step of the way.
