Turning Compassion Into Action at South Salem High School

Sometimes, all it takes is one opportunity to spark something extraordinary.

As Development Director for the Chelsea Hicks Foundation, I am always looking for opportunities to introduce today’s youth to our mission and provide meaningful ways for them to give back, grow in compassion, and expand their hearts.

When I reached out to Aaron Howard, Leadership Advisor at South Salem High School, he was immediately open to exploring ways his students could make an impact in our community. His willingness to welcome new ideas and create meaningful service opportunities for students set the stage for something truly special.

Aaron invited me to speak with South Salem’s leadership class and share the story of the Chelsea Hicks Foundation and Chelsea’s Closet.

As any group of thoughtful and discerning young leaders would, the students didn’t simply jump in. They listened closely, asked questions, and thoughtfully considered whether our mission was the right fit for the Saxon community.

Then they did what great leaders do. They found a way to help.

What happened next is a testament to the creativity, dedication, and heart of South Salem’s leadership students.

They rallied their classmates, spread the word, and inspired their school community to support children facing serious medical challenges. While I may never know exactly how they worked their magic, I know it was a combination of Aaron’s guidance, an incredible group of student leaders, and a student body full of compassion.

Near the end of the school year, I received an email letting me know it was time to pick up the donations.

When I arrived at South Salem High School, I was overwhelmed with gratitude as I wheeled out box after box filled with generosity and love.

Costumes. Toys. Markers. Crayons. Coloring books. Tiaras. Bubbles.

And so much more.

In total, the South Salem community donated an incredible 336 items for Chelsea’s Closet.

Each item represents more than a donation. It represents a child who will have a reason to smile during a difficult hospital stay, a moment of joy, a spark of imagination, and a chance to simply be a kid.

To the South Salem Leadership students, thank you for reminding us of what is possible when young people are empowered to lead with empathy and purpose.

To Aaron Howard, thank you for creating space for students to learn, serve, and discover the impact they can have on others.

And to the entire Saxon community, thank you for showing up with open hearts.

The most exciting part of this story is that it isn’t over.

South Salem Leadership has already committed to partnering with the Chelsea Hicks Foundation again next year. They are even bringing another school along for the ride.

We can’t wait to see the magic they create next.

Thank you, Saxons, for proving that leadership isn’t about titles. It’s about using your gifts to make someone else’s world a little brighter.
